Primo, the solo piece starring Antony Sher, will be the next tenant at the Music Box Theatre. The show is scheduled to begin Broadway performances on July 8 in preparation for a July 12 opening, according to a production spokesperson.
Primo, based on If This Is A Man by Primo Levi, was adapted by and stars Sher. In the show, the actor plays Primo Levi, who survived Auschwitz to bear witness to a story of almost inconceivable brutality. But against the odds, what ultimately emerges in his writing is a sense of humanity. Richard Wilson will direct.
The show was a huge hit at the National Theatre's Cottesloe Theater. It moved to Sher's hometown, Cape Town, and then to the West End's Hampstead Theatre for performances from February 23 to March 19.
In his review of the show, Variety's Matt Wolf wrote: "Antony Sher walks into the light at the start of Primo, the altogether beautiful solo show whose topic, unsurprisingly, is darkness…. Primo understands that drama has always lied in the sorts of details that here fascinate even as they scald. And because the writing--and, most notably, Sher's impressively and unusually restrained performance--shy away from sensationalism, the play finds an unspoken gallantry in Levi's account of events that can never be too familiar."
The Music Box's current tenant, Dame Edna: Back With a Vengeance, is scheduled to end its extended limited engagement at the theater on June 4. Primo is currrently scheduled for a limited engagement through August 7.
